355 Flatbush Avenue (between Sterling Pl. and Prospect Pl.), Brooklyn 11238 (Park Slope/Prospect Heights). (718) 636-1190; 636-4068. D/Q to 7th Avenue, 2/3 to Grand Army Plaza. Food: Service: Food coma: You don't expect good eggs Benedict from a diner. Diners do better to offer more basic brunch fare. But Parkside Diner falls flat in trying to offer anything. Seating for seven was difficult, as the small space is unsuited to parties greater than four. Menus must be scarce, as the waiter took some of ours back before we'd even ordered. Orange juice (not fresh but large) and coffee were slow to arrive. Parkside's $5.75 eggs Benedict had tasty poached eggs that were hot, if runny, but the hollandaise was a grainy, congealed mess reconstituted from some powder. Eggs Benedict is usually offered only on weekends because the sauce is difficult to prepare and keep fresh. For Parkside to serve that sludge only on weekends is pretentious, yet merciful. The rest of the entrée was little better. The toasted English muffin halves were burnt at the edges yet still soft at the centers. The Canadian bacon had been grilled but was flavorless, and the home fries were tasteless and oily. Few other dishes impressed. Scrambled eggs ($2.75) were nicely fluffy and waffles ($3.50) were judged excellent, and a sausage-and-mozzarella omlette ($4.75) with a side of tomato sauce was called "odd but good," if small. But French toast ($3.45) was painted a violent orange. Side orders of bacon ($1.60) were overcooked, blackened fragments sadly scattered on big plates, and looked so oily I wanted to pad them with an napkin first, like slices of pizza. The one burger ordered was greasy without and dry within. French fries ($3.35) were mealy, probably previously frozen. Why even sit down? Walk a block uphill to New Prospect Café instead. Rest rooms: Small but clean.Handicapped accessibility: A large step up from the street, with two turns to get in. No space in the aisles. Rest rooms have wide doors but, being down a narrow hall, can't be reached. |
