A former hardware store transmogrified into a corner café, Mack's Room is a comfy restaurant room sharing a kitchen with Mack's, a very popular neighborhood bar that was already serving dinners far beyond bar food (including a great bouillabaisse). If you prefer, dine while watching the game in the dark bar proper. Two years ago, Mack's prix fixe menu was cheapened to an a la carte level of cheap diner fare, but it's bounced back into the world of edibility.

A $4.50 mimosa had pulpless carton-quality orange juice but was strong with very good champagne, and was large. The $5 bloody Mary, served in a pint glass with a mammoth carrot, was a bit simple and bland, but at least it didn't come from an everyday mix. $1 coffee is hot, and was refilled often.

The $5.50 eggs Benedict had delicious, lemony hollandaise. Eggs were underpoached and the English muffin was undertoasted, but the Canadian bacon was good. Home fries were compltely bland. A side order of of bacon ($2.50) was meaty but greasy, and the four strips looked lonely on their large plate.

A vegetarian friend praised her garden burger, custom made with a good amount of cilantro and grated onions, though she complained that the bun was so large that it had to be eaten separately. It was accompanied by a generous portion of salad with a raspberry vinaigrette; if you'd rather overdose on carbs, you can substitute fries for the salad.

Rest rooms: Clean and new.
Handicapped accessibility: Rest room doors are not wide.
