Written in 1995 in support of a Guggenheim Fellowship application for Hyperchronos:

During the years that I have known Nik Williams, we have collaborated on a number of prrojects both in physical reality and in virtual reality. Nik has proven to be progressively insightful and a problem solver, two very valuable qualities. In addition, his ideas are always filled with life.

Nik is capable of creating extraordinary artificial reality environments. His work has a depth and understanding for which so few artists strive. His concern for the "sacred" and te "contemplative" goes beyond the point where most artificial reality artists are today. The artificial reality medium is filled with so much work that is commercial or grotesque, that the medium seems to be used for its shock value. It is important that more people use artificial reality in the same way as art, a timeless way. It should be thought of as a "eternal" medium, rather than ephemeral.

Depth and layers of meaning go right to the heart of the "Hyperchronos" project. To describe Chartres Cathedral as a space for all ages, with the emotions sensations it provokes, to then digitally convert these sensations into electric pulses and suggest that anyone may experience this in a portable environment, is a bold proposal. But, it takes this initiative by an artist with Nik's vision to explore the artificial reality medium to the next level, for the higher spiritual experience. This project has the potential of linking the digital to the corporeal world in a way that so few have accomplished.

I fully support Nik Williams and the Hyperchronos Project. Nik's artistic direction and abilities are capable of creating an artificial environment that can be timeless.

Sincerely Yours,

James Doerfler, AIA
