R G S

You can read all about RGS in this article that I wrote for Experimental Musical Instruments. You can also look at its old documentation file here.

RGS, and its less powerful predecessors, DRW and DRWJ, are real time sonogram paint programs: you simply draw on the screen and as you draw, the sonogram's sound is synthesized and played in a loop. You can analyze audio into its corresponding sonogram and also turn the sonogram into MIDI to be able to play a microtonally tuned synthesizer.

Here are some examples of RGS.

Ear
For the impatient: here's a demo I made for EAR magazine: first, the original sound, then the sound of RGS synthesizing the sonogram of that sound, playing that sonogram as audio, playing that sonogram as MIDI on a DX7.

DRWJ, Nov 18, 1987
This is a composition played via MIDI (except for part III, played live) on a harmonically tuned DX7.
Circle Oct 20, 2004
This was performed live at the 2004 Dream Festival at Deep Listening Space. Here, the sound of my voice is drawn and erased while being mixed with the audio of my wife Nancy Graham reading a poem based on her sleep talk.
